This past weekend I had the opportunity to venture out of the house and do something that had not been possible for over a year – witness live music being played in a bar.
The place was a bit off the beaten path (and smack dab in the middle of an upper middle-class suburb of Orange County, CA) and it was packed with a boisterous crowd who had been waiting since the Spring of 2020 to get their live music fix. I was beyond impressed as the white-hot four-piece played their hearts out as if they were performing to a packed stadium: their young guitarist rocked like mad; the drummer laid down a solid backbeat and tossed in some killer, funky fills whenever appropriate; the bassist smiled slyly as he anchored the proceedings; and the keyboardist not only dazzled as her fingers flew all over her instrument, but also spent some time roaming among the crowd as she belted out her soulful, spirited lead vocals. They had the appreciative crowd eating out of the palm of their collective hand.
Seeing a kickass band doing that thing they do in front of a rabid audience reminded me that there is nothing in the world quite as thrilling as listening to live music when the crowd and the artist make that special connection. So kudos to the fans, and big ups to the musicians doing what they love – live music is back, baby!
